The Future Of "Studio 60"

First and foremost, I just want to make it clear that I absolutely adore this show for so many reasons. To me "Studio 60" was a perfect series with just the right blend of comedy and drama with one of the most irreverent story-lines I've ever seen in television.

Who wouldn't love it?

A great cast (Mathew Perry, Amanda Peet, Bradley Whitford, Steven Weber, DL Hugley... just to name a few), Aaron Sorkin (creator of "West Wing") as head creator/writer/director, all taking place behind the scenes of a late-night sketch comedy show telling the stories of cast/crew members on live, love, and hardships of working in show business - now that's what I call television.

Is it over?

I've done much looking into so far and I can't seem to get a simple straight answer. One source is stating that the other nights showing was the Season finale, while another was stating it was a Series finale. The future of "Studio 60" looks all to skeptical. I can only hope it returns in the fall.

Why did it end?

The same reasons that made it great in my opinion. Contrary to popular belief the show maintained very strong ratings, and was one of the most watched shows both on Itunes and NBC.com. The fact is that "Studio 60"'s strengths became it's weaknesses: An all-star stellar cast with an incredibly high salary, created by one of the biggest names in television, with a time-slot that bleeds money - how could this show not be expensive to put on. And in NBC's shallow defense, it is easier/cheaper to put "Real Life Wedding Crashers" on in it's place - because that show was truly Emmy Worthy.

As for the finale?
(Warning: Spoiler Alert)

It truly blew me away. The flashbacks to 9/11 brought me back to Senior year in high school when the WTC was an all too new glimpse, and now it's just a memory that needs some rejuvenation. Season or Series finale, the ending was great for either. The show ended on the brilliant note, however a bit cliche take on pop-culture that "The Show Must Go On".

As for Danny and Jordan, they'll live happily ever after with Baby Rebecca. Maybe Tom will leave the show to spend time with his hero brother and maybe he won't. Simon has a bit more respect and versatility in pop-culture rather than being the "token-black guy". Matt and Harriet are together... again, maybe for good or maybe for bad - but that's life.

If the show comes back in the fall we have some great stories to look forward to, that don't look like any shark-jumping will be happening anytime soon. And if it doesn't, it ended on a great note with a great episode.

Isn't that what television is all about anyways?
